British weather
My dear friend's take on British weather
I arrived in Britain fully prepared for drizzle, mild disappointment, and the quiet emotional damage of spending £6 on a coffee that tastes like regret. What I did not expect was to develop a deeply personal relationship with the phrase “bit of a breeze,” which locals deploy to describe winds strong enough to exfoliate your soul.
Day one: attempted to cross the road with confidence. Immediately discovered that traffic comes from directions I can only assume were designed during a particularly chaotic tea break. Looked right, looked left, looked right again, questioned my life choices, and then simply followed a nearby pensioner who clearly fears nothing.
Day two: ordered “just a quick pint.” Four hours later, I have acquired three new best friends, been invited to a wedding in Leeds, and nodded along to at least six stories I did not understand but fully supported. At some point, someone said “cheers” and I said “cheers” back, and I think that legally makes us family now.
Day three: complained about the weather. Not aggressively, just a gentle “bit grey today, isn’t it?” A stranger made eye contact, gave a solemn nod, and for one fleeting moment, I felt truly seen. This, I believe, is how one integrates into British society.
Day four: tried to understand British politeness. Someone said “sorry” to me after I bumped into them. I apologised back. We both apologised again. We are probably still there apologising, to be honest.
Day five: learned that “quite nice” means anything from “acceptable” to “I would defend this with my life,” depending entirely on tone, context, and lunar cycle.
Day six: experienced all four seasons in one afternoon. Left the hotel in sunglasses, bought an umbrella, took it off again, put it back on, and eventually just accepted that I now live in a state of permanent atmospheric confusion.
Day seven: tried to leave. Couldn’t. Someone offered me a biscuit with my tea and I realised I belong here now.
All in all, 10/10. Would get rained on again. Possibly on purpose.
